Sydney has some toll roads and an "E-tag" auto payment system. I don't go to Sydney often, but it can't always be avoided. Anyway there is a dongle attached to your windscreen and money comes directly out of your bank account. There is also a rebate program to help ease the financial burden of paying to drive on the highway.
That's an unpleasant but necessary fact of life around here. Anyway today I applied for my rebate and it turns out I get almost $100 back for the last year of travel. Except for one thing. They then took back $10 from the rebate and are only giving me $90. The government takes GST (taxes) out of the money that they take from you but decide to give back, and the taxes apply to the entire amount you were "charged" originally. That's a lot of misrepresentation and dubious accounting and government waste simply to automatically take $10 from me. The obvious conclusion is that this particular revenue generation system was expressly designed as a money laundering scheme.
